Director, Adult Degree Program

As the Director, Bachelor of Individualized Studies (BIS), I serve as the academic unit head of the Adult Degree Program in Outreach & Engagement. In this role, I provide leadership in curriculum and program development and program review to ensure quality and compliance. The BIS addresses the needs of working adults through an innovative, individualized program of study that focuses on each student’s prior learning experiences and future professional and educational goals.

My story began in 2004 when I returned to higher education as a non-traditional student seeking to complete my bachelor’s degree and credentials to teach family and consumer sciences (formerly home ec). As a military spouse, my new journey in education took me to many diverse socioeconomic and multi-cultural communities throughout the Commonwealth where I taught curricula in middle and high schools emphasizing workplace readiness skills and career clusters and pathways leading to industry certifications. More recently, I was an Assistant Professor in the family and consumer sciences teacher education program at Utah State University. Prior to Utah State, I held an administrative leadership position at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail as the Director of Education and Programs.

Embracing the challenges of my husband’s three overseas deployments, I completed both a master’s degree and Ph.D. in Career and Technical Education from Virginia Tech. I am also credentialed as a Certified Personal and Family Finance Educator. Learning is a journey to which the process is much more important than the outcomes. Although performance on exams, papers, and assignments are part of our traditional education system, the most important things are not even graded. Encouraging students to become successful in their roles within the complex world of work and family, to be competitive in a global economy, and to be model citizens is not only essential, but my responsibility and passion.
