Maintain confidentiality

  • We do NOT expect that you will inform us if students self-disclose violations or are breaking policies. However we ask that you be willing to challenge and support them about their decisions and behaviors.
  • There is a limit to confidentiality—please share with us if the student discloses any information regarding sexual assault, sexual harassment, abuse of a minor(s) and harm to self/others if applicable. We are also required to keep statistics of domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking if the student choses to disclose this information.
  • If you are unsure of how to handle a confidential issue, please consult us.

Communicate

  • Meet once a week for an hour with your student.
  • When students miss meetings or are not engaging in the relationship please let us know right away.
  • Respond to requests for updates from your civic learning coordinator in a timely manner.
  • It is the student's responsibility to initiate and maintain communication. However, if it has been a while since you have heard from your student and they are falling off track please contact them.
  • Engage them in activities and challenging dialogue.
  • Provide them feedback about their thoughts and behaviors.
  • Act as a resource and support for your mentee.
  • Help student connect to resources on and off campus, see the Resources Section.
  • After each meeting with you mentee, complete the Mentor Reflection Sheet to record and reflect on your time together.

Mission statement and goal setting activities are required.

  • Please complete these with your student and remind them to submit their documents online.
  • Other activities should be used at your discretion; each student is different, so use good judgment in determining appropriate activities for your student.
  • Consult the Resources Section of Website for ideas others have shared.

Once student has completed their hours:

  • Submit your Mentor Reflection and Feedback.
  • Tell us if you would like another mentee or if you would like a break.
  • If you are unable to take on a mentee please let us know. We appreciate your help and respect your time.
