UREC Frequently Asked Questions

UREC's regular facility hours during the Fall and Spring semesters are traditionally:

  • Monday-Thursday: 6:00am-11:30pm
  • Friday: 6:00am-10:00pm
  • Saturday: 9:00am-10:00pm
  • Sunday: 11:00am-11:30pm

It’s always best to check jmu.edu/urec to ensure the facility or center you are planning to visit is open, especially on weekends and during break periods.

On a busy Fall or Spring day, UREC welcomes over 6,000 visitors. The busiest times are generally between 4:00 – 9:00 p.m.

Your JACard is required to access University Recreation facilities. You’ll need it to enter and exit UREC and UPARK and to play Intramural Sports at satellite facilities. If you forget your card, you may enter two times per semester by using a courtesy visit.

Full-time students automatically have a membership to UREC. UREC offers most activities and programs at little or no extra cost to participants including Group Exercise, cooking classes, and using the Adventure Center. However, if you are looking to upgrade your UREC experience, there are a wide range of specialized services for you including locker and towel service, massage therapy, and fitness & wellness services. UREC, a state-of-the-art, multi-level recreation center with 278,515 square feet of activity space, offers six group exercise studios, eight basketball/volleyball courts, seven racquetball/ wallyball courts, four badminton/pickleball courts, a squash court, a table tennis area and two indoor tracks. The Fitness Center includes cardiovascular, functional, and weight training equipment. The Aquatics Center offers two pools, a heated/jetted hydrotherapy pool, wet/dry classroom, and a dry sauna. The Adventure Center includes a climbing tower, bouldering wall, equipment checkout, bike rentals and repair services, trip instruction space and an outdoor boat yard. The Wellness Center includes a demonstration kitchen and wellness education room, athletic training room, meditation room, personal and small group training, fitness assessment and nutrition counseling spaces, as well as two massage therapy studios. University Park, accessed by Devon Lane, includes a gatehouse, open event lawn, tennis courts, sand volleyball, basketball courts, sports turf, pavilion, TEAM Challenge Course, and a disc golf course.

You can host up to two guests per visit for a fee at UREC. Make sure your guests bring their photo ID. You are responsible for their actions and must stay with them in the facility. You can bring your immediate family with you for free to UREC or UPARK on the weekends (Fridays at 6:00pm to Sundays at 6:00pm) and during break periods. Family hours are the only time that guests can be under 16 years old.

Sport Clubs are a great way to get involved at JMU and there are over 50 Sport Clubs to try! Sport Clubs are led by students and often compete with clubs from other universities. You can learn about joining the clubs at Student Org Night or on UREC’s website. Intramural Sports allow you play the sports you love, workout, and socialize at the same time! Intramural Sports are recreational and competitive sport competitions played between teams or individuals within JMU every fall, winter, and spring. View last year’s schedule to get an idea of the types of leagues UREC offers and stay tuned for next year’s schedule. Don’t have a team? No problem. Sign up as a ‘free agent’ and teams will have the opportunity to pick you up or you can create a team with other free agents.

All you need is your JACard to check out recreation equipment/supplies at our Equipment Center such as towels, basketballs or racquetball equipment. The Adventure Center rents canoes, sleeping bags, wetsuits, bikes and more! Make sure to load money onto FLEX to pay applicable rental fees.

Fitness Instructors located in the Fitness Center can provide a free equipment orientation or answer questions about individual machines or exercises. Visit the Wellness Center to learn about assessment services including fitness assessments, nutrition analyses and personal training programs.

UREC offers over 135 classes per week. Explore various formats like strength & conditioning, cardio, or mind & body! To sign up, check out URECRegister.jmu.edu or the Group Exercise schedule to see this week’s upcoming classes. Classes open for registration 48 hours before the class is scheduled to take place. Then, sign up for the class you want to take on URECRegister.jmu.edu using your e-ID and password. Classes are included in your membership!

The Madison Orientation Adventure Trip (MOAT) is a three-night, four-day adventure-based orientation program. This experience is designed to give students an opportunity to build social connections and introduce them to the local natural areas surrounding Harrisonburg. MOAT begins on Thursday, August 20, 2020 and ends on Sunday, August 23, 2020 and all participants will be able to move-in to their residence halls early. The cost is $225.00 and includes instruction, leadership, equipment, and meals. Full scholarships are available. The deadline to register is Friday, July 17, 2020.
