Parking Frequently Asked Questions

A complete listing of student permit prices can be found on our website. Most students will purchase a year-long, full-time permit, valid for the 2020-2021 academic year through August 31, 2021. The price of a full-time permit is $300.00.

Permits go on sale online in early July via the Parking Services website. You will receive an email in your JMU Dukes email when the exact date is announced. JMU does not put a cap on the number of student permits sold, but early purchase is encouraged so the permit can be mailed to your home address.

If you are living on campus, your permit will allow you to park in Resident lots (all lots beginning with “R”). Those commuting from off-campus can park in Commuter lots, (all lots beginning with “C”), as well as resident lots and designated floors in some campus parking decks. The campus parking map shows locations of all student parking lots on campus. Be sure to read the signs at the entrances to each parking facility on campus to make sure you are parking in an appropriate location.

Off-campus apartment complexes are private businesses and are not affiliated with JMU. Most require permits specific to the complex. Conversely, parking permits issued by private apartment complexes are not a valid substitute for a JMU parking permit when on campus.

After 4:00 p.m., as well as on the weekends, most parking lots on campus that are reserved for faculty and staff in the daytime become available to commuters and residents. Refer to posted signs.

For short-term stops on campus, there are a number of pay station locations where time may be purchased, and do not require permits. JMU does not offer any free parking lots for attending classes or longer term parking, but there are a number of cost-saving options to consider, including remote lot permits, evening permits and scratch-off permits. Visit the Parking Services website for more details.

There is always commuter parking available on campus, but depending on the time you arrive, the proximity of parking to your destination will vary. On weekdays, the lots closest to academic buildings fill early, while lots on the periphery of campus continue to have available space throughout the day.

It’s a good idea to look at the map before classes begin and find several parking lots in the vicinity of your class locations. Allow plenty of time to get to your destination in the first week so that you can become familiar with lot availability and walking times.

In general, resident parking is convenient to residence halls rather than academic buildings. Most residents do not drive to their classes, choosing instead to use JMU’s inner campus shuttle, biking and walking routes. When additional lots open to residents at 4:00 p.m., many residents use their cars to drive off-campus or attend evening classes.

Online payment of parking citations is available on the Parking Services website. You can also appeal a citation from the website up to ten days after the issue date.

Check out our list of tips to avoid receiving a parking citation. If you have additional questions about a ticket, please contact the Parking Services office.

Registration of bikes is not required, but it is encouraged. Bikes may be registered through JMU Public Safety at no charge. Mopeds do not require permits, but should always park at bike racks and not in parking spaces.

Yes, all vehicles on campus are required to display a JMU permit. An accessible permit, when displayed with a JMU permit, will allow the user to park in all standard, unmarked parking spaces on campus, accessible spaces and pay station spaces without payment.

Yes, you can return your permit for a partial refund by removing it from your vehicle and bringing it to Parking Services. The amount of the refund will be prorated by month through the end of March, after which returns are not accepted.
