Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, you can meet with an advisor in the Career Center to help you with all aspects of your internship search from writing your resume and cover letter, to identifying internship search strategies, and practice interviewing.

There is a wide variety of career options for every major.  The Career Guide to JMU Majors has listings of every major at JMU, along with career fields that recent graduates have gone into.  You can also find more information about the major, internship options, and common employers for each major in the Career Guide.

We provide a variety of services that assist students with their job search process. The Career Center's advisors provide 1:1 appointments and workshops to help students write resumes and cover letters that can help them stand out, how to job search and more.  The website has a lot of job search resources and tools that students can use to search for jobs by major or location.  We also have Handshake which is a job and internship posting platform with thousands of positions available.

One thing we have found to be helpful is for students to consider their skill and talents.  Employers have shared with us eight key skills that students should have when going into the world of work: Career Management, Critical Thinking/Problem Solving, Digital Technology, Global and Intercultural Fluency, Leadership, Oral/Written Communication, Professionalism/Work Ethic, and Teamwork/Collaboration. Being able to connect what you learn in and out of the classroom to your career path will help you really shine in the interview process.

We collect this information each year and post it to our Career Outcomes page. Some of the top employers for JMU students are Accenture, Booz Allen Hamilton, Deloitte, KPMG, Carahsoft, Freddie Mac, IBM, Fannie Mae, CGI, Disney, Amazon, the Peace Corps and various hospital systems.

Yes, we provide alumni career services for two years after graduation. This includes appointments with career advisors, attending Career Fair, and participating in career workshops.
