December Transfer Orientation

December Orientation is designed to prepare you for your transition to campus in January. This day long program (7:45 a.m.-5:30 p.m.) is full of opportunities for you and your family to discover everything JMU offers. It's also when you enroll in your first semester classes!

In preparation for your new life at JMU, make your Orientation reservation now and review the steps you need to complete.

Please read the information below to answer questions you may have about December Orientation.


What should I bring to Orientation?

  • All college transcripts and course descriptions (this is very important!)
  • Your e-ID and password to enroll in classes
  • Wear comfortable, casual clothes and shoes because you will be doing some walking
  • An umbrella (in case of rain), boots (in case of snow) or sunglasses (in case of sun)


Orientation Fee

Your university financial account will be charged the $180 Orientation Fee whether you choose to attend December Transfer Orientation or not.


Inclement Weather Plan

If there is inclement weather and/or the university is closed due to weather on December 5th, Orientation will take place on December 8th. Additional information will be posted on the Orientation website and emailed to attendees.


Disability Accommodations

As you complete your Orientation Reservation step within the One Book, please enter these accommodations in the appropriate area when asked. Our office will contact you with options to assist during your visit. You can also contact our office at or (540) 568-1787.


Important Dates

James Madison University will be closed for winter break beginning at 5pm on December 23, 2014 and will re-open on January 5, 2015. The first day of spring classes is January 12, 2015.


Orientation Schedule

7:45 - 8:15 a.m.

Check In: Student Success Center. Receive important materials for your day.

8:25 - 8:55 a.m.

University Welcome: Kick off your day by being formally welcomed to your new home at JMU!

9:00 - 10:55 a.m.

Students Meet with an ANT & Orientation Peer Adviser: Students will get personalized information and meet other transfer students. You'll also get the inside scoop on academic guidelines like graduation requirements, General Education and transfer credit evaluations.

Parents/Family meet with Orientation staff to get questions answered.

11:00 - 11:50 a.m.

Lunch at D-Hall

11:55 a.m. - 12:25 p.m.

Video: Presentation of essential student services with information about housing, dining, technology and financial issues.

12:30 - 1:15 p.m.

Student Resource & Housing Fair

1:30 p.m.-5:00 p.m.

Academic Advising and Class Enrollment: Students will meet with an academic advisor in departmental offices and enroll in classes

Parents/Family meet with campus departments to get questions answered.
