Sarah Sunde

Sarah is responsible for creating and implementing the vision for orientation programs that successfully transition new students to JMU. Much of her work involves fostering collaborative working relationships across campus, advocating for the needs of new students, and creating a positive work environment for current JMU students who help the department implement programs and services. Additionally, Sarah oversees the program assessment efforts for the department. Sarah received her Bachelor of Arts in International Relations degree from Minnesota State University, Mankato. She graduated from Bowling Green State University, in Bowling Green, Ohio, with a Master of Art degree in College Student Personnel.  Sarah loves yoga, reading, traveling, cooking, and running.

Associate Director

Steve Dutton

Steve oversees the programmatic elements of Orientation, in addition to the marketing and communication efforts. He also manages the recruitment, selection, and training of the student staff. Steve is also responsible for the development of programs that enhance the first-year and transfer student experience. Steve received his Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Studies from Bowling Green State University, in Bowling Green Ohio. He graduated from The University of Georgia, in Athens, Georgia, with a Master of Education in College Student Affairs Administration. Steve enjoys spending time with his wife and daughter, golfing, running, and rooting for Cleveland sports teams.

Assistant Director of Orientation Systems

Casey Ouren

Casey supervises the Operations Manager and acts as The One Book Web Team coordinator. She oversees departmental operations from development to implementation and troubleshooting of the systems. Casey also facilitates internal and external trainings of the Orientation technical systems. She graduated from The University of Alabama Birmingham with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, with a concentration in Finance. Casey received her Master's degree in Sports Administration from The University of Southern Mississippi. She enjoys photography and being outdoors. Casey likes to travel and spend time with her husband, Chris and two sons, Wyatt and Ethan.

Assistant Director of Programming

Nick Dietrich

Nick leads the planning and implementation of the summer, fall and spring Orientation programs through collaboration with faculty, students, staff and community partners. Additionally, he supervises the Coordinator of Student Staff and provides direction and accountability for this staff member, graduate assistants and over 300 student leaders. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from University of Puget Sound and Master of Education in Student Development Administration from Seattle University. Nick loves cheering on his Denver Broncos, playing golf, hiking with his dog, Ruby, traveling and hanging out with his new nephew.

Fiscal and Fixed Assets Coordinator

Debbie Pine
Contact Info

Debbie makes sure the bills are paid according to university policy. She manages equipment purchases, their maintenance involved and orders supplies. Debbie also serves as contract administrator for all of Orientation’s publications. Debbie graduated from Madison College (what is now JMU) with a Bachelor of Science in Education. She enjoys reading and gardening in her spare time.

Marketing and Web Coordinator

Mollie Zenz

Mollie handles revisions for The One Books. She manages Orientation's web and social media presence to engage incoming students during their transition to JMU. Mollie also assists in the programming for the Madison Collaborative. She graduated from Ohio University, in Athens, Ohio, with a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Family Studies.  Mollie received her Master's degree from The University of Toledo, with a major in Higher Education. She enjoys traveling, reading, and spending time with family, friends, and her dog, Rosie. Mollie also likes photography and watching a variety of television shows, including following her alma maters' teams. Her new favorite person is her baby, Caleb!

Operations Manager

Alex Van Meter

Alex is responsible for supervising the student Operation Assistants in addition to creating and updating operations protocols, serving as a liaison to the Event Management team and securing facility reservations for Orientation. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Family and Consumer Sciences from Bridgewater College. Alex enjoys riding her horse, Pepper, volunteering at her church, and traveling with her husband and dog, Otis.
