Be safe!

The following message was sent to students and parents on Jan. 17 around 2 p.m.:

Dear Fellow Dukes,

I hope all of you are doing well. We have just announced that classes will be canceled on Tuesday, Jan. 18 as many students have still not returned to campus and have been slowed down by the recent snow storm. Tuesday’s closure will allow these students an opportunity to return to campus safely before classes begin on Wednesday.

Even though classes are canceled please note that all residence halls, UREC, Festival, The Union, the Student Success Center and many of the dining operations will still be accessible to you on Tuesday.

Before classes begin on Wednesday, I wanted to remind all of you to spend some of this extra time getting ready for the semester. Take a minute and check your class schedule, get your calendar ready for the semester, and get a good night sleep Tuesday night. I know it’s exciting to be back with the rest of the JMU community but I also want you all to be safe. While many of the main roads and the JMU campus are cleared, it is still dangerous to travel by many of the side roads. Enjoy the snow but be careful and if you choose to travel throughout the community please do so sparingly and safely.

As you return to classes on Wednesday please note that we will still be requiring masks in all indoor facilities and we will be offering open COVID-19 testing for those with symptoms or who have been exposed. For more information and to sign up go to this link. I also want to encourage all of you to stay up to date on your vaccines and boosters to protect yourself and others. The Omicron variant is easily transmissible and it is active in our community and many communities across the country.

I will be on campus today and tomorrow and look forward to seeing many of you around. I hope you will have a fun and safe snow day and I’ll see you all soon.

Go Dukes!
