Dr. Justin J. Henriques, Assistant Professor in the Department of Engineering, has been awarded $14,961 from the Environmental Protection Agency for the P3 Awards: A National Student Design Competition for Sustainability Focusing on People, Prosperity and the Planet program. Dr. Henriques will be working with Dr. Keith Holland, Associate Professor in the Department of Engineering, and a team of undergraduate JMU students to develop a wearable air quality sensor for measuring and understanding air quality.

According to the team’s proposal, “There are a number of potential benefits to society including enabling community members to better understand air quality issues in their communities, and assisting them in developing better air pollution protection policies. By potentially assisting health care providers in diagnosing air quality related issues, the outcomes of this project has the potential to help the economy by reducing the health care cost associated with air pollution. Additionally, as air quality has been linked to economic growth, these sensors have the potential to improve air quality thus contributing to environments that encourage economic growth. Finally, the outcomes have the potential to help the environment by identifying local sources of pollution that could be fixed with low cost solutions that could improve environmental air quality.”

Best of luck to Dr. Henriques, Dr. Holland, and their team of students as they proceed in conducting research to help create more sustainable communities!
