"Signing up for the MOAT trip was by far one of the best decisions I've ever made, well, after choosing JMU of course. This trip helped me find some amazing friends to hang out with on campus as well as an excellent mentor in our leader. We got to experience such a wide range of outdoor activities, not only our concentration of rock climbing, but also hiking, mountain biking, swimming and more. But the best thing I got out of the MOAT trip was the relationships we all built as a team and the advice that was given to us by all of the leaders." - MOAT 2016 Participant

MOAT (Madison Orientation Adventure Trips) is 3 night, 4 day adventure-based orientation program. The MOAT experience is designed to give incoming students an opportunity to build social connections with other trip members and introduce them to the amazing local natural areas surrounding Harrisonburg.

"I was very glad I went on the trip. I made some awesome friends, did really cool activities, and helped make my transition to JMU much easier."  - MOAT 2016 Participant

The trip begins at 4pm on Saturday, August 19, 2017 and ends on Tuesday, August 22, 2017. All MOAT participants move-in to their residence halls early on Saturday. The trips are led by JMU undergraduates who are trained as trip leaders in the UREC Adventure Program with a certification in Wilderness First Aid. They are supervised by a professional staff member with over fifteen years of experience in university adventure programming.
