Ban on Appliances that use Flammable Refrigerants

News

James Madison University FM/HVAC is issuing an immediate ban on the use of any appliances that use flammable refrigerants. These refrigerants include but are not limited to R-290 and R600A which are typically found in refrigeration / kitchen appliances. These refrigerants are highly flammable and could pose an explosion risk given the right conditions. FM understands that some scientific equipment may require an exception to this rule but their volume of refrigerant is typically very small and therefore is a much smaller risk. FM will continue to evaluate this policy as new refrigerants come on the market and we receive additional training. Questions / requests for exception can be directed to Matthew Jefferson and Ken Fox in Facilities Management.
