Residential Life Experience

My first year living on campus was an interesting experience. I lived in a dorm very close to all of my classes, so it was always convenient. I immediately became very good friends with my Resident Advisor, and she helped me a lot during my first year at JMU by helping me get involved in the university and introducing me to new people. The people I met in my freshman residence hall became some of my best friends with whom I am living currently … not just during my sophomore year but also during my junior year!

The environment of the residence hall is very similar to a large family! Everybody is going through the same experience of meeting new people they don’t know, but since the friendliest people attend JMU it’s very easy to make new friends. There are also many events that are organized in the dorm so that you can mingle with other people you may not know. JMU has a very efficient on-campus housing program where they want to give you the ultimate exposure.

What I came to realize is that I got to be fully independent. I got to decide when to eat, with whom to eat or even whom to hang out. I got to learn about freedom but along with it comes responsibility… for my myself and my actions. Knowing that I have a very supportive community of friends, RAs and staff, has been very comforting and reassuring at times.
