Geology Faculty Awarded for Using Technology in Teaching

Dr. Liz Johnson and Dr. Chiara Elmi from the Department of Geology & Environmental Science received awards at the Teaching and Learning with Technology Conference held at James Madison University on October 30, 2019.

Dr. Johnson received the Charles Harris Award of Distinction for her outstanding partnership with JMU Libraries in teaching with technologies at JMU.  She developed two interactive online open-access geology textbooks and assessed student learning using these materials, in collaboration with Senior Instructional Designer Juhong Christie Liu from JMU Libraries.

Dr. Elmi received the Accelerating Creative Teaching Grant for her innovative proposal to incorporate technology in the classroom.  The title of her project is "Exploring the Shape of Minerals at the Nanoscale Using 3D Printing."

The Teaching and Learning with Technology Conference is an annual event showcasing best practices for using technology to support student learning. Educators and technologists from K-12 and Higher Education experience presentations and workshops that enable them to develop their professional practice.
