Task Force on Racial Equity event

Join the Task Force on Racial Equity in welcoming noted authors Dr. Tia Brown McNair and Dr. Estela Mara Bensimon. The conversation will focus on their book From Equity Talk to Equity Walk and the value of racial equity in higher education.

"Equity is a buzzword in higher education. Most institutions have diversity, equity, and inclusion statements, but have not developed a process for how these goals are translated into practice-–the equity walk.  For example, are we willing to examine racial equity across the board, so we can eliminate our racialized practices to support our stated institutional values and goals?"

- Tia Brown McNair

Dr. Tia Brown McNair is the Vice President in the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Student Success and Executive Director for the Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation Campus Centers at the Association of American Colleges and Universities in Washington, DC. She oversees both funded projects and AAC&U’s continuing programs on equity, inclusive excellence, high-impact practices, and student success. She is the lead author of the books From Equity Talk to Equity Walk: Expanding Practitioner Knowledge for Racial Justice in Higher Education (January 2020) and Becoming a Student-Ready College: A New Culture of Leadership for Student Success (July 2016). Alumna Dr. Brown McNair ('94) is also the National Advisor to the President’s Task Force on Racial Equity at JMU.

As Founding Director of the Center for Urban Education, Dr. Bensimon developed the Equity Scorecard, a process for using inquiry to drive changes in institutional practice and culture. University Professor Emerita at USC, Dr. Bensimon serves on several boards, including the Campaign for College Opportunity as Chair and Complete College America.
