Spring 2021 Counseling Center Services


Our Center is here to provide support.

During the Spring 2021 semester the CC will continue to offer the vast majority of our services via encrypted telehealth, based on the nature of the services we provide and in support of JMU’s efforts to enhance safety for all students, faculty, and staff.

How to Get Connected:

To first access our services, visit our Center during walk-in hours, 10 AM to 3 PM, Monday – Friday. Students can check-in at the front desk, and will be directed to one of the Counseling Center’s offices to complete paperwork and connect with a Clinician using telehealth video conferencing.

If a student is unable to come to the Counseling Center (i.e. outside of the area, quarantined, registered with the Office of Disability services as being a student with a health condition that would make a visit with us unsafe) that student can call us (540-568-6552) to complete the process remotely. If a student is currently outside of the state of Virginia, he/she/they can contact the Center for a consultation regarding current needs and referral recommendations.

Students who have previously accessed our services are encouraged to contact their previous clinician. If they need additional support or are experiencing a mental health emergency (e.g. suicidal or homicidal thoughts or actions, sexual assault or other significant trauma), they should call or visit our Center (540-568-6552) for assistance in reconnecting with services.

What’s New for the 2020-2021 Academic year:

After-hours mental health emergency support services have been expanded.

JMU students experiencing a mental health emergency (e.g. suicidal or homicidal thoughts or actions, sexual assault or other significant trauma) can call, 540-568-6552, or come into the Counseling Center to speak with a clinician when we are open, Mon - Friday: 8am-5pm. After regular business hours or on weekends services are available to JMU students who reside both on and off campus: please call the Counseling Center at 540-568-6552 and select “Option 1” to connect to the after-hours crisis line. 

We are expanding our treatment programs and groups, which will all be offered via telehealth.

  • From Nope2Cope is a new 5 week treatment program we are offering to share evidence based stress management and coping strategies for those impacted by recent events and/or struggling with COVID-related anxiety.
  • We are expanding the telehealth support groups we offer. In addition to groups that were offered in past years, we will also be holding support groups for: immune-compromised students or students with health concerns, international students, students of color, & intercollegiate athletes.

Ongoing support services will be provided using telehealth support.

This will allow more students to safely access ongoing mental health support in a way that fits their schedule and meets the health needs of our community. 

TAO – Therapist Assisted Online Version 3 accessible 24/7

This valuable resource is available to all JMU students. Access includes over 150 brief, effective, educational sessions covering over 50 common topics and skills related to mental health, wellness, and substance use issues. TAO Includes interactive sessions, mindfulness exercises and practice tools all aimed at helping you achieve your goals.

To access and create your account for this newly updated remote resource:

  1. Visit:
  2. Enter your name and your JMU email address.
  3. Create a Password (leave the 'Enrollment Key' field blank).
  4. Click “Sign Me Up.”
  5. Check your email. You will be sent a Welcome to TAO email with a confirmation link which you must click on in order to sign-in.

We are offering synchronous workshops & outreach events during the semester.

This will allow more students to safely access these workshops. We are also working to create an online library of our additional outreach presentations on mental health topics that will be available 24/7 so that viewers can access this information in a way that fits their schedule.

In addition to our workshops and TAO, there are a variety of virtual resources available through our website that provide information on many mental health topics and strategies for supporting your wellbeing.
