About the NSF-REU Chemistry Program at James Madison University:
The JMU Chemistry and Biochemistry Department hosts an NSF funded Research Experiences for Undergraduates, ten week research program. In this project funded by the Chemistry Division, James Madison University’s (JMU) Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry provides research opportunities for regional, and deaf and hard of hearing students.  The REU site provides opportunities for undergraduate students who would not otherwise have had the opportunity to perform summer research. The students include those from JMU as well as students from outside institutions that do not have extensive research infrastructure.  All undergraduate researchers have access to an extensive range of research opportunities in a broad range of disciplines including biophysical, organic, environmental, inorganic and materials chemistry.  Undergraduate interpreting students, working under the direction of a professional interpreter, research topics relevant to the challenges of interpreting in a scientific environment.  All students participate in novel research, seminars, group meetings, writing papers, presentations and social events focused on increasing interaction between all participants.   All students will gain valuable experiences that will aid in their future careers in the sciences. External faculty participants from regional colleges can impact and expand the research culture at their home institutions.
