University Statement on Student and Exchange Visitor Program Modifications

News

James Madison University is aware of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s recently announced modifications to the Student and Exchange Visitor Program. The changes threaten international students’ ability to remain enrolled at colleges and universities in the U.S. should classes at those institutions move completely online. While these changes are already being challenged in court, they create additional stress and uncertainty for international students who make extraordinary efforts to be part of our JMU community. The university is consulting with national organizations, public officials, and legal counsel regarding this directive to best understand options and outcomes, and will remain in frequent communication with individuals to whom these changes may apply. International students who wish to learn more can attend a virtual town hall on Friday, July 10 hosted by JMU’s Center for Global Engagement International Student and Scholar Services.

As an institution, we believe the campus community, and the nation at large, is greatly enriched by the presence of international students, who represented 65 different countries at JMU in Fall 2019. We recognize that everyone benefits from diverse students’ perspectives and experiences, and we will continue to support our international students to the greatest extent possible. This is our responsibility as a university that values global education and relationships as part of its mission.
