Dr. Judith Ofcarcik

Assistant Professor, Music Theory

Dr. Judith Ofcarcik studies formal function, narrative, and Beethoven's late variation movements. She has authored articles on these topics and music theory pedagogy in Music Theory Online and Engaging Students: Essays in Music Pedagogy. She also co-authored the entry "Variation Form" at Oxford Music Bibliographies.

Judith has presented her research at conferences including the Society for Music Theory, Music Theory Southeast, Music Theory Midwest, Texas Society for Music Theory, and Rocky Mountain Society for Music Theory. Prior to her appointment at JMU she was Assistant Professor of Music Theory at Fort Hays State University in western Kansas.

In addition to teaching music theory, Judith is active as a church organist, pedagogue, and occasional recitalist. Past programs include a performance of J.S. Bach's "Goldberg" Variations at the organ, and selections from mystical works by Arvo Pärt and Olivier Messiaen.
