Beginning Fall 2019 the Liberal Studies Minor provides subject-area content required for students majoring in the four-year Elementary Education (BS) licensure program and is recommended for students majoring in Exceptional Education (BS).

How to Add the Liberal Studies Minor

Current JMU students add the Liberal Studies Minor through their Student Center using these directions, or view this short video tutorial to walk you through the steps. 

Courses Required for the Liberal Studies Minor 

  • ensure classroom teachers have appropriate subject-area knowledge to work with young students and
  • meet Virginia teacher competencies by providing breadth and integration across the content areas of language arts, social sciences, mathematics, natural sciences, and technology.

General Education and BS Degree Requirements

  • The minor adds 18 credit hours beyond JMU's General Education requirements and provides students with choice where possible in the curriculum.
  • The minor requires certain courses within the General Education curriculum that are designed specifically to fulfill subject area competencies for VA classroom teachers.
  • The minor fulfills between 4 and 6 credit hours of BS degree requirements for the ELED and EXED majors.
