Beginning Fall 2019 the Liberal Studies minor provides subject-area content required for students majoring in the four-year Elementary Education (BS) licensure program and is recommended for students majoring in Exceptional Education (BS).

Courses required for the minor

  • ensure classroom teachers have appropriate subject-area knowledge to work with young students and
  • meet Virginia teacher competencies by providing breadth and integration across the content areas of language arts, social sciences, mathematics, natural sciences, and technology.

The Liberal Studies Minor: General Education and BS Degree Requirements

  • The minor adds 18 credit hours beyond JMU's General Education requirements and provides students with choice where possible in the curriculum.
  • The minor requires certain courses within the General Education curriculum that are designed specifically to fulfill subject area competencies for VA classroom teachers.
