Rex is an alumnus of The Ohio State University (BS Ed '68, MA '71. PhD '73), majoring in Speech, Theatre, and English. Taught English and Drama at West High School in Columbus, Ohio before coming to Madison College in 1974.

At Madison Rex served as Director of the Speech Communication Area in the Department of Communication Arts, as Head of the Department of Communication, and Coordinator of Cluster One in the General Education Program. Rex retired in 2003 and continued to teach part-time and serve in several volunteer opportunities including a 4-year term as President of the Faculty Emeriti Association, volunteer usher for Forbes Performing Arts Center, and as a member of the College of Visual and Performing Arts Advisory Council.

Rex lives in Northern Augusta County with his wife, Jane (JMU MS '97).
