Honors Ambassadors prepares current students to showcase the Honors College by sharing how it has contributed to their collegiate experience. Ambassadors provide positive student contact for prospective students and their families, for current students, and for campus and community partners. Honors College students can be found in every corner of campus, and Honors Ambassadors help increase the College’s visibility and impact.

Time Commitment

Participating guidelines have changed a bit because of COVID. For spring 2021, Honors Ambassadors are expected attend two bi-weekly Zoom meetings a month, as well as participate in small brainstorming groups. Once physical distancing restrictions are lifted, Ambassadors will be expected to spend at least 3 hours in Hillcrest House per month and 5 hours at public- and university-facing events, at which they are expected to be the “face” of the Honors College and to wear Honors College apparel. Honors Ambassadors use Slack, a team management digital platform, for communication.

Honors Ambassadors assist in formal recruitment events, including fall Open Houses, CHOICES, and Orientation. These obligations likely will be met in virtual formats for spring 2021. Generally, responsibilities may include:

  • Assisting with information sessions where Ambassadors present to prospective students and share about their experiences in the Honors College;
  • Assisting with outreach efforts to prospective students and their families;
  • Attending alumni receptions, meeting with visitors, responding to inquiries from prospective students, recruiting new Honors Ambassadors, and other duties as assigned.

Applicants must have completed at least one semester in the Honors and must be in good standing. If selected, you agree to serve for one calendar year as an Ambassador, with the option of returning for subsequent terms if you have met your Ambassador obligations and you choose to do so.

Ambassadors are expected to be available for biweekly meetings for ongoing training and professional development. Applicants ideally are available on Wednesdays at 5:15 p.m.

Eligibility and Expectations

We want the Honors Ambassadors cohort to be made of up diverse students whose backgrounds and majors speak to the wide array of prospective students interested in JMU. We specifically hope that BIPOC, first generation, and LGBTQIA+ students will want to join our Ambassador community. We also encourage Spanish-speaking students to apply. Our goal with spring recruitment is to add enthusiastic Honors spokespeople to make our cadre of Ambassadors more representative of the campus as a whole. We will be adding 5 to 10 new Ambassadors to our group, and we are particularly looking majors in the College of Education and the College of Visual and Performing Arts. Regardless of major, students from states other than Virginia are also encouraged to apply.

We will notify applicants via email if they are selected for an interview. The application to be an Honors Ambassador is due by 11:59 p.m. on Monday, February 1, 2021 for the 2021 calendar year. We will notify applicants via email if they are selected for an interview. Interviews will be held the week of February 8-12, 2021.
