Instructions for those who may have been exposed to COVID-19
If you believe you have been exposed to COVID-19 (for example, someone who you have had close contact with told you they tested positive for COVID-19), there are a few important steps to take.
- Do not panic. Even those who have been infected by this virus generally have very mild illness.
- Complete the Self-Report form through MyJMUChart. If you have questions, please contact the University Health Center
- Wear your mask and stay away from others. Virginia Department of Health will contact you, please answer your phone and provide information as necessary.
- If you develop symptoms call the Health Center or make an online Telehealth appointment.
Should you get tested?
Since the incubation period of COVID-19 is 2-14 days, there is no test that will detect the disease minutes or hours after you have contracted it. We will test people known to be a close contact but they still need to quarantine for 14 days regardless of test results. If you want to be tested, the recommended time for testing is between 5 and 7 days after the contact of concern.
