Why did you choose JMU?

There were two reasons why I chose James Madison University. One, studying in America was one of my dreams. Therefore, when I had the opportunity, I seized it. Two, I like to do things which involve computers and technology, and I heard that James Madison University’s Computer Science department is really good. JMU is in the top 10% of the country for CIS. More specifically it was ranked #17 out of 293 schools by College Factual. It is also ranked #3 in Virginia. They have classes related to Cyber Security and Artificial Intelligence. I am interested in coding or cybersecurity, as a result, I chose to come to James Madison University.

What do you like best about JMU?

I prefer the weather that is not hot but cold. In Virginia, the weather perfectly balances, moreover I get to go skiing in winter. Finally, people in Virginia are so friendly and welcoming that when I am bumping into problems, I can ask them, and they will help me as much as they can. For example, when I to go to the ISAT building, it is kind of confusing for me, so I ask someone who is in the building to help me with the directions. It always makes my day.

What surprised you the most during your first semester?

To be honest, nothing shocked me during my first semester. I would say that the lifestyle in America was almost the same or similar to where I am from. However, there were a few aspects of my life that I felt needed to change. First, I needed to schedule my time according to my classes. Second,  as I learned more about the culture I realized that I needed to lean how to blend in with other students. Finally, I had to improve my English quickly, so I will always find an occasion to speak English as much as I can.

What is your favorite class?

I would say that my preferred class is one of major’s class: IT 212E. The class is about logic gates, which consists of using a semiconductor to build a complete set. I acquired more concepts and essential knowledge related to information technology. I get excited but also frustrated during the labs building sets. I made some mistakes during the building process. Then I powered the breadboard, I did not get the result I wanted correctly. I don’t give up, I find the problems and fix them. Even though building breadboard can sometimes be complicated but this is exactly why I love it, I love the feeling of solving problems.

What do you like to do during your free time?

During my free time, I sometimes go to work out in the gym to be healthier. Additionally, I have also joined some clubs such as BJJ- Brazilian Jin-Jitsu so I can be connected to more people whom I would  not never meet otherwise plus. I learned self-defense techniques. The other club is Bridges International, I participate in a lots of events which introduce me to different facet of American Culture, such as square dancing. Finally, I study with my friends for homework and exams.
