Why did you choose JMU?

I knew JMU was the right place for me because of two main factors. Firstly, the JMU college of business and renowned and well recognized and after looking up pictures of the campus I knew this is where I wanted to be for the next 4 years. The location of JMU was also an important factor for me while choosing universities, JMU is located in near Shenandoah with beautiful sceneries all year round and is only 2 hours away from Washington DC which I though was the perfect balance.

What do you like best about JMU?

The best part of JMU is the community. Having come from a completely different part of the world and not knowing what to expect I have always felt welcome here and have met some amazing people who are always looking out for you. The people here are friendly and are willing to step out their way to help you. A simple smile can make you friends.

What surprised you the most during your first semester?

The most surprising thing about JMU during my first semester were the Student Org Clubs. There are over 300 student organizations on campus and you are very likely to find more than one club you are interested in. The thing I like the most about these student clubs is how you are able to find fellow dukes who share the same interest as you and being able to work with these people. I have been an active member of Indian Student Organization from my first semester here and am currently the Sports Chair. I help organize sports events with other organizations and make ISO take part in various intramural sports every semester.

What is your favorite class?

I have taken a bunch of good classes but my favorite so far has been COB241 (Financial Accounting) with Professor Derstine. Having never taken an accounting class before I wasn’t really sure what I was getting into but my professor had made this class really interesting to the point where I was actually excited to do homework. She was also really approachable and outgoing and always made sure every student grasps the concepts before moving forward and if she felt like someone hadn’t she would offer them help during office hours. I enjoyed doing accounting and even had me consider being an Accounting major.

What do you like to do during your free time?

When I’m not studying I’m usually hanging out with friends and if I’m between my classes you’ll most likely find me at TDU, playing billiards or on the couches. Other things I like to do during my free time are going to the gym, playing soccer and gaming. I’m also a part of the Indian Student Organization where we organize various cultural events and activities to promote diversity. During the weekend me and my friends like to go explore downtown Harrisonburg and find new places to eat.
