Why did you choose JMU?

In 2015, I came to visit JMU with my older brother, it was his freshman year at JMU, and immediately I felt in love with the campus. I was impressed with the gorgeous buildings and the amount of services that are available for students, such as UREC the University Recreation Center in which students can participate in many different group exercises or the amazing swimming pool, the Health Center that provides appointments with doctors, the Counseling Center, and many others. In addition to the amazing campus the Study Group Program, a English pathway program, made my decision to choose JMU even easier.

What do you like best about JMU?

I think that being a JMU student is much more than the academic life, it means that you are part of the Dukes' family. I would say that for any student or staff, regardless of nationality, it’s possible to feel how much this university is so welcoming and how things here are all purple and gold. JMU is perfect for those students who are looking for opportunities in life, and in many ways JMU provide a lot of great opportunities. That is why I love being a Dukes, I am one of those students who wants opportunities to show how much I can contribute to society and I know that JMU can help me with that.

What surprised you the most during your first semester?

I would say that when I came to JMU the biggest concerned that I had by that time was that my English level, I was worried that all my English knowledge wouldn’t be enough. I was afraid that people would not understand me or worst than that, maybe people would make fun of me because of my English barriers. But I was wrong, thanks to the sense of community and the idea that JMU is a family and any member of this family helps each other, I was surprised as to how comfortable and shameless I felt speaking English with Americans.

What is your favorite class?

It’s hard to choose my favorite class. So far, I loved all the Spanish classes that I took. Probably the reason is because it’s a new language that is similar to my native language, which is Portuguese, but at the same time it’s challenging. It’s very interesting how my native language sometimes helps me with Spanish because the some words could be exactly the same however some words has a complete different meaning, so I have to be careful with that, which sometimes is challenging in a conversation.

What do you like to do during your free time?

During my free time I like to hang out with my friends, we usually make barbecues, or go to downtown Harrisonburg events together. Also, I’m involved with a JMU club called Madison Motorsport, which has a lot of nice events during the weekends, we go to racetracks in the Virginia area, we do go-karting and many other events. I also enjoy staying at home, most of the time I’m cleaning or just organizing the house, I’m a little crazy with organization and cleaning.
