Alan Hawley joined the Center for Global Engagement in August of 2021 and serves as the Coordinator for International Student and Scholar Services. In this role, Alan provides support for incoming international students, helping them make the most out of their time at JMU.

Alan is originally from Virginia Beach and graduated from Old Dominion University with a B.A. in International Studies with a minor in Geography. He is currently working on a Master’s of Education in School Counseling. He hopes to use this degree to support student transitions from high school to post-secondary pathways, ecouraging international educational experiences along the way.

Prior to joining the JMU team, Alan held positions in customer service, logistics, and higher education. He firmly believes that broad, diverse experiences inspire one’s passions and encourage personal development, with international travel and new cultural experiences taking center stage. Alan has traveled to several countries in Central America and Europe, and spent a month backpacking through the islands of Java and Bali in Indonesia. His favorite part of traveling is getting to try new culinary experiences unique to each destination.
