As America suffered through the Great Depression, the Federal Art Project focused on keeping the arts alive. This governmental relief program paid artists $24 a week to document the land and the life of the American people. The works, frequently placed on loan to state teacher’s colleges like Madison, created awareness and appreciation for American art.
