Elizabeth Hoover

Formerly the Assistant Director of the Furious Flower Poetry Center, Elizabeth Hoover was the founding editor of The Fight & the Fiddle. Before coming to Furious Flower, she was the assistant editor of Sampsonia Way magazine, where she covered international literature. Her criticism and author interviews have appeared in the Paris Review, Los Angeles Times, and the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, among others.  She is also the author of three biographies for young adults and is currently researching a biography of the poet Robert Hayden. She is also a prize-winning poet.

Dr. Joanne Gabbin

A professor of English at James Madison University, Dr. Gabbin founded the Furious Flower Poetry Center in 1999, prompted by the overwhelming success of the historic gathering she hosted at the university in 1994, which was the first academic conference on black poetry. As executive director of the center, Dr. Gabbin remains a visionary leader. She is the author of Sterling A. Brown: Building the Black Aesthetic Tradition, editor of Furious Flower: African American Poetry From the Black Arts Movement to the Present and The Furious Flowering of African American Poetry, and executive producer of the Furious Flower video and DVD series. Karen Risch Mott

A collaborative writer (ghostwriter) whose first book made bestseller lists, Ms. Risch Mott has helped dozens of nonfiction authors get their work in print, mostly with how-to and more recently with memoir. She is also the author of 30 Days to a Successful Book: Your Guide to Crafting a Book (or Book Proposal) That Sells. Her experience spans all media and publishing avenues: in addition to writing books and book proposals for authors, agents, and publishers, she has executive produced a major-market radio show, and been managing editor and senior writer with magazines. She writes for and edits The Fight & the Fiddle and posts/publishes its content on the web.


Jasmine Jones

Jasmine Jones designed the logo/masthead for The Fight & the Fiddle in 2014. She received her bachelor’s degree in Media Arts & Design with a concentration in Converged Media from James Madison University later that year. She has a passion and skills for creating media across a range of platforms and interconnecting all aspects into multifaceted products or campaigns. Along with design, she is also drawn to the power of story told through still and moving images, as well as written and spoken word. Now based in Northern Virginia, Jones is currently pursuing her career as a graphic/multimedia designer and visual storyteller.
