Harrisonburg, VA— A screening of local community-inspired, non-fiction films produced by students in James Madison University’s School of Media Arts and Design will take place at the Court Square Theater in downtown Harrisonburg from 7p.m. to 9p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 15.

SMAD student filmmakers worked on a series of short non-fiction videos that tell the stories of Harrisonburg High School students who are refugees and HHS students who participate in the Scholars Latino Initiative program. Also, longer documentaries were created that explore a diverse range of subjects and topics including: the challenges a refugee from Eritrea faces transitioning to life in the Shenandoah Valley, the stigma and struggles of being a teen mom, a young man’s attempt to become a legally documented U.S. citizen, and the efforts of Harrisonburg community members to address climate change by investing in solar energy.
