November 2 - Homecoming Dukes' 5k Run/Walk

5k Runners

JMU students, faculty/staff, alumni and community members, start Homecoming off with UREC's annual run/jog/walk through JMU's beautiful campus!

This year's Homecoming Dukes' 5k Run/Walk will take place at 8am on Saturday, November 2, 2013 at UREC.

Strollers and pets on leashes allowed. All registered participants will receive a race shirt!

November 4 - Indoor Soccer Holiday Tournament Registration

Are you ready to take your climbing to the next level? The climbing technique program will help you learn how to make better use of your footwork, the importance of core strength, and show to how/when to use s specific moves such as layback, stemming, and matches in your climbing. No required knowledge or skill related to adventure activities but requires good physical ability.

This is your chance to try out a white water kayak in the UREC pool! No previous experience is necessary. Our instructors will teach you how to exit the kayak if you flip over and introduce you to kayak strokes. If you have experience and want to practice your kayak roll, they can assist you with that as well.

Mandalas are sacred circles that have been long been used to facilitate meditation in the Indian and Tibetan religions. People create and look at mandalas essentially to center the body and mind. Experience a deep sense of calm and well-being with this form of meditation.

November 8 - Cycle for Survival

Cycle for Survival is the high-energy indoor team cycling event that benefits rare cancer research at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Cycle for Survival raises money to fight rare cancers by funding critical research. PROMotion is organizing this event.

November 10 - CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer

This American Red Cross course provides training for people who are expected to respond to emergencies as part of their job duties. As a professional rescuer, you will learn to recognize and provide care for respiratory and cardiac emergencies. You will learn how to correctly use an Automated External Defibrillator to aid in cardiac emergencies. This class is intended for those who seek a certification for the first time or for those who are renewing their certification. There will be videos, demonstrations, as well as hands on experience. You must be on time to participate in this class.

Register at UREC with $65 FLEX by 4pm the Friday before the program begins.

Download and print this Training Material before the course and bring it with you. Registered participants must arrive early for any of the Red Cross Courses that you register for (10 to 15 minutes is recommended). If you arrive later than the scheduled start time, you will not be permitted entry into the class and will not be eligible to receive a refund.

November 10 - First Aid

This American Red Cross course provides training in recognizing an emergency situation. The participant will be able to: control severe bleeding, care for shock, soft tissue and musculoskeletal injuries, sudden illness, and heat/cold related emergencies. This class is intended for those who seek a certification for the first time or for those who are renewing their certification. There will be videos, demonstrations, as well as hands on experience. You must be on time to participate in this class.

Register at UREC with $25 FLEX by 4pm the Friday before the program begins.

November 14 - Indoor Lead Climbing

Ready for the sharp end of the rope? So, you have been climbing for a while now and you are ready to start leading. Our instructors will teach the proper techniques and how to avoid mistakes like back clipping and Z-clipping. You will have the opportunity to practice your skills by mock leading on our wall. All participants must have belay approval at the UREC Wall.

November 16 - Caving Trip

Explore the amazing underground world with UREC on one of our introductory caving trips. The Shenandoah Valley is home to hundreds of caves to explore. During this trip you will be introduced to basic caving techniques while exploring one of our nearby novice level caves. Caves in the Shenandoah Valley maintain a constant temperature of 55 degrees year round.

Even though we will be taking you to one of the “entry level” caves it still requires an ability to crawl on hands and knees and tolerance for tight squeezes through muddy spaces. No required knowledge or skill related to caving is required.

Register at UREC by the Thursday (11pm) before the trip with $35 FLEX.

November 23 - Thanksgiving Break Climbing Trip

Earn your turkey on this trip to Seneca Rocks, WV.

Seneca Rocks is the only "true peak" (a peak inaccessible except by technical rock climbing techniques) on the East Coast of the United States. We will set up top-rope climbs to challenge and cater to all abilities from beginner to advanced.

In addition, each participant will have the opportunity to summit Seneca via a multi-pitch traditional climb! Participants will also learn rappelling, anchor building and the basics of seconding a leader on traditional climbs. In the evening, we will relax and cook group meals in a rustic cabin minutes from Seneca Rocks.

All participants must have belay approval at the UREC Climbing Wall to attend this trip. The trip fees include instruction, equipment, transportation, food and lodging.
