Here and There

Fri, 3 Sep 2021 8:00 AM - Wed, 29 Sep 2021 5:00 PM

Here + There (2021) is a group of photographic collages created by seven Harrisonburg High School students that gives visual form to their lived experience as refugees. Each print is a composite of two different photographs. By combining multiple images into one composition, the images in this exhibition represent the multi-layered reality of the artists’ personal identities. Each artist resides in Harrisonburg, but carries with them images and memories of places as far away as Afghanistan and Mozambique. The purpose of this exhibition is to make visible these complex personal identities, and to invite the viewer to reflect on the diverse range of experiences present in our local Harrisonburg community.

Each artist has created between one and four compositions, combining different aspects of their daily life. They created these compositions as part of a summer arts workshop held at James Madison University in May & June 2021, taught by Assistant Professor Elisabeth Kvernen. The workshop was supported by Church World Service Harrisonburg, the School of Media Arts & Design, the Institute for Creative Inquiry, and a grant from the JMU Faculty Senate.
