On April 17th, Furious Flower Poetry Center is pleased to welcome three distinguished poets to James Madison University. Join us for an afternoon of poetry featuring poet and judge, A. Van Jordan, accompanied by prize-winners Rachelle Parker and Cynthia Manick.


A. Van Jordan is the author of four collections: Rise, which won the PEN/Oakland Josephine Miles Award (Tia Chucha Press 2001); M-A-C-N-O-L-I-A (2005), which was listed as one of the Best Books of 2005 by the London Times; Quantum Lyrics (2007); and The Cineaste (2013). Jordan has been awarded Whiting Writers Award, an Anisfield-Wolf Book Award, and a Pushcart Prize. He is also a recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship (2007), a United States Artists Fellowship (2009), and a Lannan Literary Award in Poetry (2015). He serves as the Robert Hayden Collegiate Professor of English Language & Literature at the University of Michigan. 

Rachelle Parker is a writer and editor whose work has appeared or is forthcoming in several journals and anthologies, including Tupelo Quarterly, The Adirondack Review, The BreakBeat Poets Volume 2: Black Girl Magic, among others. She is a fellow of Tin House Summer Poetry Workshop, Willow Arts Alliance, and Callaloo Creative Writing at Brown University.

Cynthia Manick is the author of Blue Hallelujahs (Black Lawrence Press 2016). Winner of the 2016 Lascaux Prize in Collected Poetry and the 2018 Elizabeth Sloan Tyler Memorial Award; Manick is founder and curator of the reading series Soul Sister Revue.

Parking: From 3:45pm to 5pm, vehicles without JMU parking registration will be permitted to park in lots C11, C12, and D3 on East Campus.
