Reexamining Product-Oriented Academic Culture: Let’s talk About the Process of Scholarship
In Person Roundtable: February 22, 2023 from 10am-12pm.
With an R2 University classification, some faculty have become more mindful about scholarly productivity. This roundtable will provide a space to conduct a genuine discussion on what it means to have an “excellent” rating in scholarship and how the current norms of scholarship and evaluation systems influence participants’ scholarly behaviors. The discussion will be centered around the process and stories of the participants’ scholarship rather than the products themselves. Participants will brainstorm values that drive their decisions, courses, and qualities of scholarship. The participants will work toward a values-based framework for research and scholarly evaluation in small groups. Some questions we will consider include:
- How has the meaning of scholarship productivity changed (or not) for you and your academic unit recently?
- How do the current norms of “excellent” scholarship influence your scholarly goals and behaviors?
- What are the core values that you would like to achieve through your scholarship?
- How do these values matter for your scholarship quality and excellence?
- How can we bring these values to shape academic and scholarly culture?
Event Date & Time: 2/22 from 10am-12PM
