Online Reading Group: Offered both February 9 and 13.
There are many, ongoing conversations about the topic of faculty burnout–or dissatisfaction, or low morale, or whatever (perhaps less polite) label we want to put on it.
In a recent Chronicle of Higher Education advice piece, “Faculty Job Dissatisfaction Isn’t About ‘Burnout,’” Maria LaMonaca Wisdom argues that concern about (lack of) impact on others is a primary reason many faculty are struggling right now; focusing on how our work might be helping others in meaningful ways, then, can increase satisfaction, and agency, for faculty.
This one-time, 60-minute online Read and Dialogue discussion will be offered on two different dates: take your pick. We will discuss Wisdom’s article, and explore ways that we as faculty can support each other in addressing the causes of faculty dissatisfaction, including finding ways to cultivate our sense of impact.
As with other readings in this series, we will spend our time discussing how relevant the ideas are to our current context, how we might apply them to our own teaching, what questions or critiques we have about the claims and conclusions, and anything else the group wants to explore in the time allotted. This group is intentionally designed to require very little time commitment, given the burnout(!) and exhaustion that we recognize everyone is feeling these days.
