Group will meet online on Tuesdays 9/21, 10/5, 10/19, 11/2, 11/16, and 11/30 from 1:00-2:15 PM.

This online Faculty Learning Community (FLC) will provide a space for you to plan a course that you will teach next semester. In it, we will explore "the essentials" of university curriculum design, topics that are typically covered in the summer jmUDESIGN institute, which we had to cancel this past year due to the pandemic. Our six sessions will focus on backward design, alignment, assessment, inclusive pedagogy, and interactive teaching. Although this FLC will take place online via Zoom, we will explore tools for both in-person and online instruction. We will root our work in current and critical conversations in academia, use evidence-based practice, and engage in diverse pedagogies. Most importantly, we hope that this FLC provides space to be in a community with others as we all work toward the goal of becoming better equipped as educators at JMU.

Faculty participants will make progress toward these program outcomes:

  • Developing a new course or re-designing course curriculum;
  • Identifying pedagogies (as experienced through the FLC) that can be applied to or implemented in course content; and
  • Engaging in critical dialogues about teaching and learning as related to identity, positionality, privilege, access, and equity. 

Faculty participants will make progress toward these teaching outcomes:

  • Appreciating pedagogy—the art and science of teaching and learning--as a significant higher education endeavor;
  • Identifying factors that influence pedagogical choices;
  • Creating assignments and/or courses that support higher-level learning (deep learning); and
  • Designing and offering courses or curricula that align learning objectives, assessment, and learning activities.
