Finding and Minding Your Inner Mentor (Online Workshop)

Thu, 4 Feb 2021 9:45 AM - 11:00 AM

These online workshops on Wednesday, February 3 from 2:15-3:30 PM, and Thursday, February 4 from 9:45-11:00 AM have been canceled.

When we think of mentors, we may imagine someone older and more experienced in our profession who can ‘show us the ropes.’ Fortunately, these more hierarchical modes of mentoring have now made room for more equitable models of mutual and peer mentoring. Yet we may still conceive of a mentor as someone outside of ourselves. This conception can be limiting or otherwise problematic for women and/or BIPOC, in particular, who are already implicitly (and sometimes explicitly) encouraged to conform to external norms, guidance, and feedback (especially of dominant groups), rather than follow the guidance of their own internal compasses. Participants in this session will explore the concept of “inner mentor” and how this kind of mentorship might function in their own lives, to shape career and other important life decisions.

Facilitator: Emily O. Gravett, CFI and College of Arts & Letters

Faculty participants will make progress toward these program outcomes:

  • Identifying what an “inner mentor” is; and
  • Describing their own inner mentor and what guidance this mentor might or could provide.

Faculty participants will make progress toward these career planning outcomes:

  • Identifying and implementing effective strategies for career advancement; and
  • Developing and fostering productive mentoring and networking relationships.

CFI programs will be canceled automatically if JMU is closed for inclement weather.

Our programs are intended for JMU faculty or staff only. If you are a graduate student or administrator and would like to attend, please sign up and leave a note at the end of the survey.

We want this program to be welcoming, accessible, and inclusive for all of our participants.
