Teaching large classes entails distinct challenges and opportunities. Grading, assignments, participation, connecting, and feedback at scale are but some of the challenges we face under the most normal of circumstances. If you haven’t noticed, we’re not in normal times! Now “large” is more like about 51+ students. Moving these classes online (again), especially once the semester has already started (again), requires new considerations, new skills, new tools...and a boatload of creativity. Join this online roundtable with other large-class colleagues to share tips and tricks for finishing up this semester strong and preparing for something similar the spring.

Faculty participants will make progress toward these program outcomes:

  • Describing distinct challenges and opportunities of teaching large classes in our current and projected contexts; and
  • Identifying tips and tricks for engaging students online in large classes.

Faculty participants will make progress toward these teaching outcomes:

  • Identifying factors that influence pedagogical choices;
  • Creating assignments and/or courses that support higher-level learning (deep learning);
  • Designing and offering courses or curricula that align learning objectives, assessment, and learning activities; and
  • Articulating how current pedagogical choices reflect disciplinary norms.

Our programs are intended for JMU faculty or staff only. If you are a graduate student or administrator and would like to attend, please sign up and leave a note at the end of the survey.

We want this program to be welcoming, accessible, and inclusive for all of our participants. Please describe any considerations (e.g., disability, wellness, cultural, etc.) you want us to know about in the registration survey. You may also reach out to us personally at Tiffany Runion, or (540)860-0524.
