How can we use principles of good course design to create learning spaces that counter racism, trauma, and other hurdles to learning in a time of a global pandemic, social unrest, continued racism, and weakened government institutions? Join a Faculty Interest Group (GIF) that takes this year’s jmUDESIGN - Virtual Edition as its starting point and uses literatures on Universal Design (for Learning), Critical Race Pedagogy, Trauma-Informed Teaching, and other equity-focused approaches to help faculty redesign (parts of) their teaching. Since this is a FIG, the meeting agendas are largely participant-driven, with the support of CFI personnel. Participants are encouraged to watch or re-watch this year’s jmUDESIGN - Virtual Edition video lectures, which will be made available to those who sign up. Participants can choose whether they’d like to attend all meetings or pick those that are most relevant to them, once the group has set an agenda during the first meeting.

Faculty participants will make progress toward this program outcome:

  • Developing learning experiences that are responsive to the current situation of multiple crises.

Faculty participants will make progress toward these teaching outcomes:

  • Appreciating pedagogy—the art and science of teaching and learning—as a significant higher education endeavor, and
  • Designing and offering courses or curricula that align learning objectives, assessment, and learning activities.

We want this program to be welcoming, accessible, and inclusive for all of our participants. Please reach out to us at or (568-4846) with any considerations (e.g., disability, wellness, cultural, etc.) you want us to know about.
