What’s Happening, and What Should We Do? (Online Roundtable)

Fri, 3 Jul 2020 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM

Many (all?) members of the JMU community feel overwhelmed and worn out by the onslaught of health, political, and academic crises as well as the uncertainty of the next semester. The COVID-19 crisis has created not only health concerns but also new political conflicts and new educational needs. The crisis surrounding racist violence and resulting protests has brought existing conflicts to a head and has re-emphasized educational needs around racial justice—and it has created the opportunity for sustained institutional change. While JMU faculty and staff realize that in such times educational institutions are more important than ever, they also realize the budgetary threats that we are facing and have to manage their own fears of the future as well as those of their friends and families, often with children stuck at home, where they require increased attention. In other words, there is much to do, and we have less bandwidth than usual to do it.

This roundtable session will not provide you with solutions to the crises that we encounter. But it will offer an opportunity to connect with colleagues, who we see less frequently these days, and to engage in a conversation about what is happening, what needs to happen, and what we should do. The session will use a conversation café format, a structure developed for in-depth conversations after traumatic events. Its combination of individual reflection, small-group discussion, and plenary reports, combined with its explicit interaction processes, makes it easier to create an equitable environment in which all voices can get heard.

Registration closed.

Please sign up to receive the video conferencing link for the session. For added security, the link will be emailed to you about half an hour before the session.

This program is for JMU faculty and staff only.
