Center for Faculty Innovation

Designing a More Fulfilling Professional Life (Workshop)

Wed, 30 Oct 2019 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Location:  Rose Library room 3311; lunch will be provided.

This workshop will also be offered on Fri, 01 Nov 2019, 9:00 AM-11:00 AM in SSC.

Balancing the demands of professional and personal lives can be complicated, partly because few of us have training in examining and planning our lives. This workshop will capitalize on recent successes offering a workshop-oriented class called "Design Your Life" to students and alumni at JMU. Workshop participants will be coached through a series of activities to: (1) make connections between their past and present circumstances, (2) discover opportunities for near term exploration, and (3) create value in their life through intentional life prototypes. The key takeaways for this workshop are that each participant can find a more purposeful professional life, and that methodologies used in this workshop can be transferred to appropriate opportunities for our students to help them in their own journeys. In other words, while this workshop focuses on participant career planning, its lessons can also be used in your work with students.

Faculty participants will make progress toward these career planning outcomes:

  • Appreciating the place and purpose of comprehensive career planning in academic careers; and
  • Identifying and implementing effective strategies for career advancement.

Faculty participants will make progress toward these program outcomes:

  • Choosing the next steps in their career planning; and
  • Having a more fulfilling and joy filled academic career.

If you plan to attend, and would like to join us for lunch, please register on or before Friday, Oct 25.

We want this program to be welcoming, accessible, and inclusive for all of our participants. Please reach out to us at or (568-4846) with any considerations (e.g., disability, wellness, cultural, dietary, etc.) you want us to know about.
