A Model for Teaching Large Classes: Facilitating a “Small Class Feel” (Workshop)

This workshop presents a model for teaching large classes that facilitates a “small class feel” to counteract the distance, anonymity, and formality that often characterize large lecture-style classes. The facilitator Dr. Eric Pappas has taught 300-student large classes for 13 years, including two with co-facilitator and current undergraduate teaching assistant Ms. Kiersten Sanok. They will discuss a wide variety of teaching methods, class activities and policies, and teaching assistant roles that make their large class more personal and conversational. Following a description of the course and it characteristics, participants will engage in a discussion of large-class teaching methods. Participants will receive an article published by Pappas and Rosie Lynch (JMU ‘16) prior to the workshop.

  • Identifying strategies for giving large classes that “small class feel”.

Faculty participants will make progress toward these teaching outcomes:

  • Appreciating pedagogy—the art and science of teaching and learning--as a significant higher education endeavor; and
  • Identifying factors that influence pedagogical choices.
