Contemplative Practices for Self-Care (Faculty Community)

Location: Rose Library room 5211

This Faculty Community is offered on Wednesdays (12:00 PM-1:00 PM). 

How do educators and faculty leaders take care of their inner life during the hustle and bustle of the academic year?  Join a community who engage in self-care through exploring contemplative practices.  Mindfulness meditation/quiet centering practice, walking meditation, metta (loving kindness) meditation, and compassionate listening will be explored. Research on contemplative practices suggest that they can help to foster focus, self-regulation, insight, empathy, and an interpersonal connection to others (APA article, Psychology Today article). 

Explore contemplative practices and discuss your experiences in a community of peers at this weekly opportunity.  In addition, participants will discuss how contemplative practices apply to other aspects of their teaching, scholarship, career, and to work-life integration.   

Note:  Drop-in participation is welcome.  Weekly participation is encouraged.  Regular participants will be invited and encouraged to co-lead contemplative practices to gain facilitation confidence—if so interested.

Faculty participants will make progress toward these program outcomes:

  • Experiencing contemplative practices;
  • Applying contemplative practices to scholarship, teaching, career planning, and work-life integration.

Faculty participants will make progress toward this career planning outcome:

  • Identifying strategies to maintain balance in work-life continuum.
