Educators encounter student learning challenges in their courses everyday: socio-emotional challenges; drifting attention; boredom; shallow analysis and synthesis; digital distraction and lack of connection; and challenges of self awareness about how one learns best—to name a few.  Contemplative pedagogies aim to promote deeper focus, insight, empathy, and an interpersonal connection to others in the classroom.  Contemplative practices (mindfulness practice, journaling, compassionate listening, creating classroom rituals, beholding, etc…) are effective in meeting some learning challenges commonly encountered in everyday learning contexts.  Participants will experience contemplative practices they might consider using in their classroom and explore how certain contemplative practices can help co-learners move through learning challenges. In addition, participants will develop ideas and applications of contemplative practices to foster deep learning in their learning contexts.

Faculty participants will make progress toward these program outcomes:

  • Experiencing contemplative practices;
  • Exploring contemplative practices as pedagogical tools; and
  • Applying contemplative practices to meet learning challenges encountered in courses.

Faculty participants will make progress toward these teaching outcomes:

  • Appreciating pedagogy—the art and science of teaching and learning--as a significant higher education endeavor;
  • Identifying factors that influence pedagogical choices; and
  • Creating assignments and/or courses that support higher-level learning (deep learning).
