Creating an EPIC Teaching Experience (Roundtable)

Fri, 18 Nov 2016 11:20 AM - 12:35 PM

Location:  Rose Library room 5211

Thursday's session at SSC has been canceled.

The EPIC (Enhancing Pedagogy through Innovative Classrooms) Center within the Student Success Center is now in its third year of operation. In this facilitated roundtable discussion, participants will explore the ways in which JMU faculty have used the EPIC classrooms and identify strategies to make traditional classrooms feel more innovative. The session will begin with a short presentation detailing the findings of a mixed methods research study of JMU faculty experiences teaching in EPIC. Discussion will emerge around best EPIC practices and features. To conclude, participants will brainstorm specific ways to bring EPIC-like strategies to traditional classroom spaces.

Faculty participants will make progress toward these program outcomes:

  • Identifying common themes related to the experience of teaching in an EPIC Center classroom, and
  • Identifying strategies to bring the best of EPIC classrooms to traditional classroom spaces.

Faculty participants will make progress toward these teaching outcomes:

  • Appreciating pedagogy—the art and science of teaching and learning--as a significant higher education endeavor,
  • Identifying factors that influence pedagogical choices, and
  • Integrating knowledge of student development models in teaching philosophies and practice.
