Designing Creative Assessments (Workshop)

Assessment is, at its simplest, a way of collecting information about learning. It can also help both students and instructors make adjustments to improve future performance. In order to be meaningful, assessment should be aligned with learning outcomes. But how can it be creative and engaging too? After reviewing the importance of alignment in the backward design framework, participants will then explore how constraints can foster creativity and practice a generative process for developing creative habits of mind and unexpected ideas. Participants will be invited to apply this process to their own outcomes in order to imagine new possibilities for assessment.

Faculty participants will make progress toward these program outcomes:

  • Identifying how to align assessment, whether summative or formative, with learning outcomes,
  • Employing a creative process to develop new ideas, and
  • Creating a new assessment to implement in a specific course.

Faculty participants will make progress toward these teaching outcomes:

  • Creating assignments and/or courses that support higher-level learning (deep learning),
  • Designing and offering courses or curricula that align learning objectives, assessment, and learning activities, and
  • Practicing the integration of scholarship and teaching.

Participants are encouraged to bring their breakfast or to utilize SSC's Dunkin' Donuts location (opens at 7 AM) for this morning session.
