Scientific Computer Network Specialist


The College of Science and Mathematics (CSM) at James Madison University (JMU) is accepting applications for an Information Technology Specialist II to support the vision of JMU and the CSM Office of the Dean, by providing technology support to faculty and staff in CSM, to configure, manage and maintain CSM servers, and to provide guidance and expertise in Cloud-based computing to the College. The IT Specialist II will also provide faculty and staff in the Department of Geology and Environmental Science (GES) with technical, network, specialized software and hardware support. GES comprises 16 full-time faculty, 2 full-time staff, and 3 part-time faculty. GES facilities include three 24-seat computer labs, two smaller computer labs, and 11 research labs with instrumentation that require special hardware and software needs, including Linux.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Configures, manages, and maintains CSM servers providing network support for instruction and research within the CSM.
  • Supports faculty and staff users, providing training and support as needed to optimize computational capacity of the CSM.
  • Supports infrastructure development and personnel training for modern computing solutions in support of the academic mission of the CSM and the university.
  • Provides guidance and expertise to CSM in Cloud-based computing.
  • Communicates and coordinates activities with supervisor and IT Specialist peers within CSM, and the network, systems and security specialists at JMU central IT, in order to aid in technology planning, coordination, and information exchange across the College and JMU.
  • Manages Windows-based print servers and maintain network printers in GES, and manage and maintain computers and technology within 3 teaching labs and 2 smaller labs all running Windows OS.
  • Installs and maintains computers of all GES faculty and staff, half of which use Mac OSX, as well as provide support, maintenance, and problem resolution for their specialized software and hardware, and support for their use of classroom and departmental educational technologies coordinating with JMU Classroom Technology Services as appropriate.


  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills are essential as is the ability to work well with faculty and staff, and other IT Specialists.
  • Significant knowledge of servers, both hardware and software.
  • Significant knowledge of Apple and Windows computing environments, both hardware and software.
  • Significant knowledge of current and emerging technologies, including Cloud-based computing.
  • Experience in migrating an organization to new technologies.
  • Proficiency with Linux systems is required.
  • Experience managing Windows-based print servers and maintaining network printers in a business environment.
  • Ability to learn and adapt quickly.
  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose and resolve computer software problems.
  • Experience in providing service, support, and/or training to others.
  • Ability to effectively assimilate and communicate relevant information to facilitate the efficient resolution of and prevention of problems.
  • Bachelor’s in Information Technology, Computer Science, Systems Administration, Computer Engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience preferred.
