Shenandoah Valley Migrant Education Program Tutor Service Learners should be ready to invest a small amount of time to be a positive influence and friend to a migrant student. Tutors will attend an orientation session to the SVMEP tutoring program, then will be matched with a migrant student from a school in Harrisonburg City or Rockingham County (K-12). CWS Refugee Resettlement Program Family Connection The Refugee Resettlement office strives to connect their recently arrived refugees with local Harrisonburg families/individuals to foster friendship and community. Getting to know a new town, system, and way of life can be overwhelming, and many of our families are not even aware of the opportunities and resources offered in Harrisonburg. Local community members can partner with refugee families and “show them around town”, build friendship, and offer a bit of assistance. We are always looking for local community members and/or families whom we can partner with refugee families. Service-learners would be required to make a 10-12 month commitment and must be Harrisonburg or Rockingham County residents. Families with children are welcome to consider this opportunity! CWS Refugee Resettlement Program In-Home English Tut for Mothers of Young Children This opportunity is for service-learners with ESOL teaching/tutoring experience only. Service-learners who have experience in teaching English or who are certified ESOL teachers are welcome to consider providing in-home weekly tutoring for women who are not able to attend class outside of the home. We have many mothers with young children who are extremely interested in learning English but are limited because of their children’s age. Service-learners would be required to make a 10-12 month commitment and must be Harrisonburg or Rockingham Country residents. Service-learners would meet in the client’s home 1-2 times a week.
