Class of 2020 In-person Commencement Ceremonies
5:00 p.m. or 7:30 p.m.

We will confer degrees live and in-person, with graduates walking across the stage as their names are called. Register for either the 5:00 p.m. or 7:30 p.m. ceremony to obtain tickets for your family and friends.

Students who plan to attend must submit a reply for themselves and may request up to six guest tickets.

Should the graduate response rate be low, the two ceremonies may be combined into one.

If you have commencement questions, please email our University Events team at jmugrad@jmu.edu.
If you have ticketing questions or issues, please contact the Ticketing Office at 540/568-3853 or email
athletic-ticket@jmu.edu.

The safety and health of graduates, their families and friends, and everyone in the JMU community continue to be the university’s guiding principle as administrators make decisions based on the best information available. JMU is determined to host in-person ceremonies to celebrate the extraordinary and resilient Class of 2020 and may need to adjust attendance requirements for the safety of all attendees. If guests and/or graduates are NOT fully vaccinated, you are asked to please wear a mask at the ceremony.

Information will continue to be shared via your @dukes.jmu.edu email (or the one you provided to us after you received the postcard), and on the   www.jmu.edu/commencement website.

While the JMU community has witnessed significant progress in the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and with vaccinations, there are still some very real challenges we must overcome together. As family and friends gather to celebrate the Class of 2020 from many different localities and states, all of which differ in vaccination rates and outbreaks from new COVID-19 variants, it is important to do so safely. All graduates and guests will be required to wear masks during the commencement ceremony. The graduates will have an opportunity to remove their masks for photographs as they cross the stage.  We also ask that you stay at home if you are sick or were recently exposed to COVID-19. The safety, health and well-being of students, staff and their families is our top priority.

In preparation for the class of 2020 commencement ceremonies at either 5 p.m. or 7:30 p.m. on Friday, September 3rd at the new Atlantic Union Bank Center, we provide the additional information:

  • Tickets have arrived in your student athletics account. Please click here for more information of how to download and transfer them to guests.
  • Graduates will cross the stage during this ceremony as their name is read aloud. Graduates will need to wear regalia in order to participate. Visit the JMU Bookstore if you have not obtained regalia. We will have professional photographers from GradImages capturing each graduate moment on stage.
  • Name card pick-up: Typically, graduates pick up their name cards the week of exams, however this year our graduates will be traveling from various parts of the country and we need to quickly distribute name cards that are critical for tracking your professional photos and will display your name when your name is called. We are hosting a name card pickup at Atlantic Union Bank Center from 1:00-3:30 p.m. on Friday, September 3rd. We encourage all graduates to pick up name cards during this time if at all able. If you are unable to attend the name card pickup, we will have name cards available when doors open, one hour prior to the ceremony start time but allow time as there will be lines.
  • Name pronunciation: There will be an opportunity at the name card pickup to clarify your name pronunciation with the reader. The reader will also be available when doors open, however it is best to do this at the name card pickup.
  • After parking in the Ballard/East Campus parking deck, graduates will enter the Plaza entrance of the Atlatic Union Bank Center in two doors, furthest to the right (closest to the ticketing office.) Look for signage and ushers to assist graduates find their way. Graduates will go through a security check point where they will be asked to unzip their gown to check for prohibited items.
  • Guests may enter at the Plaza entrance or the Champions entrance.
  • Bag checks and metal detection will occur at all entrances. We encourage all guests to remove unnecessary items to make it a quick process to enter the arena. Prohibited items are listed on the website.
  • Parking: You may either park in the Ballard/East Campus Parking Deck, adjacent to the Atlantic Union Bank Center or any of the Festival Center parking lots – D3 Lot, C12 Lot, C10 Lot. Please find the parking map here.

The Team Store will be opened during the commencement ceremonies for guests and graduates to purchase JMU memorabilia: Class of 2020 t-shirts, Diploma Frames, Alumni gear, etc. Outside the entrances, Commencement Group will be available for guests to purchase flowers and other gifts for their graduate.
  • College Celebrations and receptions will occur on Saturday, September 4th at 10:00 a.m. Graduates were asked to sign up for this event through the commencement registration process.
