INSTRUCTIONS FOR GRADUATES

The Graduate School Commencement is scheduled for Friday, December 15, 2017 at 7 p.m. in Wilson Hall.

The Undergraduate Commencement is scheduled for Saturday, December 16, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. in the Convocation Center.

Proper academic attire is required. Candidates wear tassels on the right side of the mortarboard and then shift them to the left in unison when the degree is conferred.

ARRIVAL/SEATING:

The Graduate School: Name cards will be handed out in the Graduate School the week of exams (Dec. 9-15) instead of seat assignments being emailed. Plan to arrive at Wilson Hall no later than 6:30 p.m. and be in your assigned seat by 6:45 p.m. Graduates should proceed to their reserved seat. If you are unsure of your seat assignment staff will be available to help you find your seat. The chairs will be labeled with row and chair numbers corresponding the row and chair number you receive in the email. 

Undergraduate Ceremony: Plan to arrive at the convocation center no later than 9:30 a.m. and be in your assigned seat by 9:45 a.m. Graduates should enter the convocation center using entrance E and proceed to the convocation center floor where staff will be available to help you find your seat. You will receive an email the week prior to commencement with your seat assignment.  The email will list your assigned section, row and chair number.  Please see the diagram below to find the location of your college.  The chairs will be labeled with row and chair numbers corresponding the row and chair number you receive in the email.

A commencement program and name card will be on your seat.  Please complete the back section of your name card for the commencement photographer.  You will take the name card to the reader as you approach the stage.

There is no place to store purses, jackets or other personal belongings, please leave them at home or give them to family members to safeguard.

INDIVIDUAL RECOGNITION OF GRADUATES:

Graduates will walk to the stage row by row, beginning with the students in Section 1, Row 1. Each row should stand in unison, turn to the left, and walk to the reader at the left of the stage. The first person in each college should wait until the dean presents the college to President Alger before proceeding to the reader’s table.  Your name will be read from the name card that will be on your chair. Hand your card to the reader, wait for your name to be called, and walk to the stage. Cross the stage from left to right, shaking hands with your dean and with President Alger.

Return to your chair using the aisle to the left of your section (facing away from the stage) and be seated.

RECESSIONAL:

The platform party will leave first, followed by the academic unit heads. After the faculty recess, the graduating class will recess and exit Doors D & E where they will meet friends and family.

QUESTIONS:

On Friday evening, December 15th, staff will be available near the Wilson Hall stage to answer questions you may have about your name card, seating location and when/how to walk across the stage. Also, if you believe that your name may be difficult for the reader to pronounce, see Dr. Jeanne Martino-McAllister by 9:30 a.m. located at the reader table near the stage.

On Saturday morning, December 16th, staff will be available in the back hallway near concessions to answer questions you may have about your name card, seating location and when/how to walk across the stage. Also, if you believe that your name may be difficult for the reader to pronounce, see Dr. Jeanne Martino-McAllister by 9:30 a.m. located at the reader table in the back hallway.
