Dr. Barbour began her professional career as a social worker, but soon found her niche as a preschool teacher. She had a variety of teaching experiences prior to completing her doctoral program: in an inner-city child care center, a Head Start Center, child care vocational education program, and as a college instructor. Prior to coming to James Madison University she spent 27 years at Kent State University as both an Early Childhood faculty member for 20 years and as the Associate Dean for seven years. Her scholarly interests and publications have focused on parent-child relationships (particularly adolescent mothers and their children), authentic assessment of young children, and early childhood professional development, particularly in relation to laboratory school programs. She serves the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) as a reviewer of higher education programs and developer of early childhood teacher standards. She serves the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) as a Board of Examiners member.  She also serves on the Executive Committee of the Early Education/Child Development Special Interest Group of the American Educational Research Association (AERA).
